About Myspace Classifieds
Online Myspace classified advertisements are available to users in North and South America, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, Europe, and Australia. Its services are free to both users and advertisers, and advertisements stay "live" for 30 days after posting. As of July 28, 2009, MySpace Classifieds became a part of the Oodle Network for Classified Ads.
Main categories include "Jobs", "Housing for Rent", "Stuff for Sale", "Cars and Vehicles", "Tickets and Events", "Pets", "Housing for Sale", "Community" "Services", "Music XChange" and "Filmmakers".
The "Pets" category features several exotic and unusual animals, including a llama, an Emperor scorpion, chickens, a miniature Capuchin monkey, and a Street Manager. (It is highly suspected that this last "pet" is actually a scam of some sort. A warning appears when users click on the photo to enlarge it, and it is recommended that they do not proceed further).
The "Stuff for Sale" category has an "Everything Else" subcategory, which includes such offerings as a vacuum cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, cemetery plots, an AED defibrillator, and jellybeans. There is also a "free" subcategory, which includes an adult DVD, as well as people looking for or offering different items and services such as an astrology "find people" service. This is not a dating service’; rather, they advertise that they can locate people with whom others have lost contact or who are or may be considered as missing. One very interesting category is the "Filmmakers" category. Information on film announcements, film events, production and post-production jobs, as well as other things dealing with film and film making is included here.
Myspace classified advertisements offer features for buyers and browsers, which allow them to see a high number of listings from MySpace as well as other sources, such as eBay and AutoMart, and also obtain information on such things as pricing guides, fraud detection, and inventory.
Sellers are offered free postings that will reach more buyers, and a chance to create a bulletin or blog that will tell others about their particular advertisement(s).
Chris DeWolf and Tom Anderson were the founders of MySpace itself. They met in 2002, when Anderson and DeWolf both worked for the same company. Anderson was working as a product tester for a particular product in which DeWolf was involved, and offered DeWolf his frank (negative) opinion of the product. Impressed with Anderson's honesty, DeWolf offered him a job at that company, which ultimately went bankrupt at a time when other "dot-com" companies were also suffering the same fate. They formed their own business "ResponseBase", using information from their former company.
MySpace was actually created by DeWolf and Anderson in 2003, as they continued to try to work in a field that was being more closely scrutinized and supervised. Both were familiar with social networking, and subsequently, DeWolf and Anderson approached executives at the company to which they had sold "ResponseBase". They were given the "green light", and MySpace was launched, quickly becoming the place for bands and clubs to advertise.
It continued to gain popularity throughout 2004 and 2005, and in 2006, DeWolf and Anderson concentrated on making the site safer, as well as paying closer attention to the content and bring legal against those who misused. As MySpace continued, and continues to grow, they are working on making MySpace a site that will appeal and attract users of all ages.
