Craigslist is an international classified advertisement website, featuring local classified advertisements and forums. It is community-moderated, which means that the users are in charge of the website.

Craigslist postings are all free except for job posts in the San Francisco Bay Area, seventeen cities or regions and Washington, DC. It costs $75 to post one job in the San Francisco Bay Areaand that fee covers one job posting in one category. The same job posted in two different categories would cost $150.

The seventeen cities or regions include Atlanta, GA; Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA; New Yorkorange County, CA; Philadelphia, PA; Phoenix, AZ; Portlandor; Sacramento, CA; San Diego, CA; Seattle, WA; South Floridaand Washington, DC. It costs $25 to post one job in one category in these places; $50 for one job in two categories.

In New York City, advertisers pay a $10 fee for each brokered apartment rental posted. Craigslist also has several categories for posting advertisements. Posting is free except for the adult services and therapeutic services categories. It cost $10 to post ads in these categories.

These categories can support live advertisements. When approved, these ads are posted for $10 and then re-posted for $5. Other categories on Craigslist include job postings, housing information, goods and services, local "bulletin boards" and others. If it can be thought of, there is a chance it can be found on Craigslist.

The website prides itself on having rather plain featuresand being easy to read. There have been few, if any, changes to the site since 2001. In fact, Jim Buckmaster Craigslist's CEO, has been quoted as saying he isn’t interested in raising the profit margin, he wants to help people find what they need.

Craigslist was originally started by Craig Newmark in early 1995, when he found himself living in San Francisco, knowing no oneand not having any knowledge about what was happening. He was already familiar with other social networks and virtual communities, such as WELL ("Whole Earth Lectronic Link") and Usenet that existed at that time. Using those premises, he began posting an e-mail list of events in and around San Francisco.

From there, the website quickly gained popularity in the United Statesand went international after requests from users to do so.  Currently, the website is published in English, French, German, Italian, Portugueseand Spanish. Since late 2000, Jim Buckmaster has served as the CEO. Craig continues to be involved with Craigslist, by working in customer servicesand continuing to let people that there is really a "Craig" behind Craigslist.
